To support its commitment to providing a safe learning, working, and research environment, MIT recently expanded its background check policy and program.
This policy became effective on August 14, 2023; all candidates hired as a result of searches initiated on or after that date receive job offers contingent on a satisfactory background check.
Background checks are now required for:
- All new hires (faculty, staff, and postdoctoral scholars)
- Re-hires who have not been employed by MIT for more than one year
- Current employees appointed to certain roles if they have not undergone a background check during the last four years (see policy for details)
Background checks include:
- Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) — convictions and pending charges
- Sexual Offender Record Information (SORI)
- Social Security number trace
They do not include:
- Data older than seven years
- Arrests that did not result in convictions
- Credit checks, drug screening, fingerprinting, or educational screening
Background checks are conducted in accordance with MIT’s CORI Policy.
Next step:
Review the process or submit a request for a background check.
