To support its commitment to providing a safe learning, working, and research environment, MIT recently expanded its background check policy and program.

This policy became effective on August 14, 2023; all candidates hired as a result of searches initiated on or after that date receive job offers contingent on a satisfactory background check.

Background checks are now required for:

  • All new hires (faculty, staff, and postdoctoral scholars)
  • Re-hires who have not been employed by MIT for more than one year
  • Current employees appointed to certain roles if they have not undergone a background check during the last four years (see policy for details)

Background checks include:

  • Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) — convictions and pending charges
  • Sexual Offender Record Information (SORI)
  • Social Security number trace

They do not include:

  • Data older than seven years
  • Arrests that did not result in convictions
  • Credit checks, drug screening, fingerprinting, or educational screening

Background checks are conducted in accordance with MIT’s CORI Policy.

Next step:

Review the process or submit a request for a background check.
